Kayaking or paddleboarding with children: questions to ask the club

Age, confidence in water, craft and equipment: prepare a precise enquiry to confirm the participation conditions for each child.

For an outing with children, ask the provider to confirm that your family can take part in the exact service you are considering. “Family-friendly” wording or a photo does not confirm the accepted age, participation requirements or each child’s place in the craft.

Introduce every participant

Give the number of adults and children, each child’s age and everyone’s watersports experience. Describe confidence in water without overstating it. Ask about the club’s requirements and any documents needed.

In its swimming guidance, the French Sports Ministry encourages parents to have a swimming instructor assess children’s ability to move safely in water. This alone does not establish suitability for a service: the activity conditions must still be confirmed with the provider.

Clarify the conditions of the exact offer

Do not transfer a minimum age from one place to another. For example, an official introductory session in Nogent-sur-Marne specifies a minimum age and a requirement to swim; these conditions apply to that activity, not to every European club.

Ask whether the selected session accepts each of your children, in which arrangement and with what adult presence. A different duration, route or craft may lead to a different answer.

Check everyone’s place and equipment

Who shares a craft with whom? Does each child have a designated place? Does the available equipment fit their body size? Ask the club which measurements it needs to prepare equipment and arrangements.

The RNLI notes that buoyancy aids come in different sizes and must fit correctly. The team should therefore check equipment on site: simply listing it among supplied items is not enough.

Plan the day around the session

Ask about the total time needed, whether there is a briefing and the possibilities for returning or adapting if difficulties arise. Avoid promising children a swim, beach visit or stop that does not appear in the confirmed programme.

Bring the personal items requested by the club, a change of clothes and arrangements for anyone not taking part. Before paying, obtain written confirmation of the group composition and accepted option. This prevents arriving with a booking that does not match your family.

Check before booking

  • Every age and level of experience has been communicated.
  • The offer’s participation conditions are confirmed.
  • Craft allocation and adult presence are specified.
  • The club confirms suitable equipment and the total time needed.
