Kayaking or paddleboarding: supplied equipment and what to bring
Separate the club’s equipment, your personal items and what should stay ashore. A checklist to avoid surprises at departure.

“Equipment included” does not describe everything you will receive. Before the outing, obtain the provider’s list and distinguish paddling equipment, personal items to bring and arrangements for keeping belongings ashore.
Ask for a list, not just confirmation
Have the provider specify the craft, paddle and equipment suited to the service. Ask whether particular clothing is supplied or required and whether a container for belongings is available. A promotional photo does not prove an accessory is included.
Include the number of participants and the sizing information requested by the club. The RNLI emphasises a correctly fitted buoyancy aid. The team should therefore check the fit on site and explain its use.
Confirm your personal items
Ask for written footwear and clothing instructions suited to the environment, season and programme. Include spare clothes and how to protect personal belongings. A list for a summer outing is not a universal reference.
For freshwater activities, the French ministry responsible for the sea recommends checking safety equipment’s condition and suitability. Preparation is not about collecting accessories: it means having what the actual planned outing requires.
Plan what stays ashore and what goes with you
Ask whether there is storage, a changing room or a designated place for keys and bags. If a barrel or bag is provided, clarify its capacity and usage limits. Do not assume storage is supervised or its contents covered if damaged.
For kayaking, the RNLI recommends a suitable means of calling for help, kept on your person and accessible. Ask the club what arrangements apply to your service and how to reach the team. A photo of a phone in a bag does not replace those instructions.
Do not choose a paddleboard leash at random
A leash connects the paddler to the board, but its type and use depend on the environment. The RNLI notes that ankle models are unsuitable for some moving waters where entanglement is a risk. Have the provider choose and explain the device; this article is not an installation guide.
Before departure, check with the team that the issued equipment matches the advertised list. Report poor fit or unclear instructions before launching. A short check on site is more useful than ticking a checklist without explanation.
