Heritage and culture

La Roque-Gageac village and the valley castles

The village stretches between the Dordogne and a tall south-facing cliff. From the water, the houses, quays and nearby fortified sites form a continuous view of the valley. After the descent, a walk reveals the built heritage, gardens and history of traditional river navigation.

With children : Bring shoes for the visit and keep children close on the quays and natural banks.

Wind and water conditions

Between the Lot boundary and the La Yerle railway bridge at Alles-sur-Dordogne, independent SUP is covered by a three-year trial announced in 2026. The stated season runs only from 1 June to 30 September; it does not authorise outings outside that period. Check all conditions of order DDT/SEER/GMA/2026-021 and navigation notices before setting out. Rafting still requires qualified supervision. On the day, check the forecast, flow, water level at Cénac, restrictions, weirs, dams, branches and fallen-tree blockages. Allow for cold water and plan exits and your return. Wear a buoyancy aid, keep clear of bridge piers and leave space for sightseeing boats. Children must stay with an adult able to handle the craft; the tourist office specifies a minimum age of six and the ability to swim unaided. Between Fayrac and Pech, consult current navigation notices; old works notices do not establish a current restriction. Postpone the outing if conditions deteriorate. At Pendoilles beach, municipal order 2026-093 prohibits public access, including by canoe or kayak, because of an unstable tree. EPIDOR notice 2026-519 remains listed without an end date on 8 October 2026: respect the safety perimeter and check for an official reopening before landing there. The closure concerns the beach, not the whole Dordogne. Upstream of the Pendoilles cliffs, notice 2026-508 reports a left-bank obstruction and advises keeping clear via the right bank on that passage only.
